About Me
Hello, friends and googlers,
I'm Kate Watson, a writer and editor with fifteen years of digital media experience. I operate out of a unique sense for what real people care about and a delusional belief that I can get anybody to talk to me.
After earning my degree in Creative Writing (brave), with an emphasis on poetry (heroic), I started how all non-nepo-baby millennials in media started out in 2008, working as an executive assistant for a nonprofit. More specifically, I did administration for a municipal labor union in New York City, where I trained under an octogenarian Pulitzer Prize nominee who taught me how City Hall actually works. That’s how I learned I am a Newsroom Person—fueled by bad coffee, industry gossip, dry humor, and the thrill of cutting adverbs.
Since then, I’ve interviewed hundreds of people for national and regional news outlets. I’ve profiled influencers, politicians, authors, doctors, professors, and lots of my neighbors. I’ve also contributed sponsored and branded content to some of the biggest media conglomerates on the planet, including Hearst, Buzzfeed, and Conde Nast. I’ve edited so many other writers, for friendship and for money, that I’ve lost count. In my current role, I lead a team of four knockout creatives, shaping content strategy, brand voice, product development, and the editorial calendar.
But I’m most proud of two skills that can’t really be taught. One, I can spot a strong voice and a clear thinker from a mile away, and two, I can shape a middling first draft into a compelling, must-read feature, fierce and fast. Okay, and a third— I’m fun to work with, because I’m funny and I almost never get stressed out. I can also write a poem on the fly, though I make no promises that it will be any good.
I don’t really write health and wellness content anymore—Covid killed the vibe, and I’m more of a religion and culture writer these days. But I’m always happy to get tips, commiserate (read: complain) about media, connect about craft, and get a good (bad) coffee. Email me at katewatsonwrites at gmail dot com.
